That smoke you see may not be what you think!
Barbeque competitions continue to be hotter than ever – generating revenue and fun for towns all over Colorado and the United States.
The events bring more than good food, fun and entertainment ; they have a direct and indirect economic impact on the towns or organizations that host them.
Research shows that a typical out-of-town visitor spends $257 per day in the barbeque host community. That average expenditure varies depending on the geographic locale and the size of the event.
There will be dozens of sanctioned and unsanctioned BBQ competitions across Colorado this summer. The last two Memorial weekends, I’ve participated as both a judge and demo cook at the “Blues, Brews and BBQ” at the Beaver Creek Resort in Avon, Colorado. Thousands attended both years boosting revenue at area retail and lodging establishments. The teams themselves add to the impact at many local businesses as they purchase meats, supplies and overnight lodging.
It is this kind of economic success that is driving many towns and organizations to enter the barbecue arena for the first time. While they may have to start small, they still reap benefits from holding barbecue competitions. In Colorado, attendees will often find a brew fest held in conjunction with the barbecue competition. This is a great way to boost attendance! Usually attendance is free, but tickets must be purchased to sample the food and beer. One that is coming up in my backyard is the “BOULDER COUNTY BREWBQ FESTIVAL & FUNDRAISER”, with proceeds going to the Boulder Rotary club and scholarships for the YMCA of Boulder Valley scholarship fund. Don’t miss this fun event! http://www.ymcabv.org/ymcaweb/brewbq
